The announcement was made by the President of the NGO PROMETRA International, Dr. Erick Gbodossou, following an important meeting held with the Saltigué healers of the Sine region.Preparations have already begun with a symbolic set-setal (ritual purification) of the Malango Center, which still bears the scars of neglect and inactivity. Maintenance and rehabilitation work is underway to ensure the site is ready to host, under good conditions, the return of the traditional divination sessions known as “XOY,” scheduled for the last week of July 2025.Dr. Erick Gbodossou and his team deemed it necessary to restore the Malango Center, which for a long time served as a key hub for traditional medicine and Serer divination rituals. Through this project, PROMETRA International, in collaboration with the Association of Healers of Malango, aims to innovate by involving a wider range of stakeholders this year.Expected participants include: the Ndeupkates (practitioners of the Ndeup ritual) from traditional villages, women guardians of the sacred forests of Casamance, the Network of Journalists for the Promotion of Traditional Medicines of Senegal (REJOMETRA), as well as other organizations. Together, they hope to make the 2025 edition of the XOY a major event for the Saltigués and the communities, who interpret omens related to politics, the rainy season, disasters, or social unrest.Beyond divination, these sessions also offer spiritual guidance in the form of recommendations: sacrifices, offerings, and other propitiatory acts intended to ward off threats looming over the villages or the nation. The XOY, an ancestral Serer divination practice, remains vibrant in the Sine region. While some villages continue the ritual discreetly or even secretly, it is the Malango Center that has greatly contributed to its broader visibility through its Saltigués.Recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the XOY remains a strong identity marker of Serer tradition and Senegal’s spiritual heritage.Babacar Sene – REJOMETRA Senegal
